Delhi Building Collapse LIVE: 3 Dead, 9 Rescued in Satya Niketan; Rescue Operation Continues

Delhi building collapse

New Delhi, September 6, 2026: A major building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area has triggered a large-scale rescue operation after a multi-storey building collapsed on Sunday afternoon. According to the latest reports, at least three people have died and nine people have been rescued from the debris. Rescue teams are continuing their search for people who may still be trapped.

The incident took place near Shiv Mandir in Satya Niketan, an area close to Delhi University’s South Campus that has several student accommodations, paying guest facilities and eateries.

What Happened in Satya Niketan?

A five-storey building used as a boys’ paying guest accommodation collapsed in the Satya Niketan area of South-West Delhi on Sunday afternoon.

According to reports, the building had a basement along with five upper floors. The collapse was reported at around 1:30 pm, prompting an immediate emergency response from Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, NDRF and other disaster-response agencies.

The building was reportedly being used as a PG/hostel accommodation for students, raising concerns that a significant number of people could have been inside when the structure collapsed.

3 Dead, 9 Rescued

The latest reports indicate that three people have died, while nine people have been rescued from the collapsed structure.

Earlier reports during the rescue operation gave lower casualty and rescue figures. As emergency teams continue removing debris and searching the site, the numbers have been updated.

Several rescued people were reported to have suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospitals, including the AIIMS Trauma Centre.

Rescue Operation Underway

A coordinated rescue operation is underway at the site.

Teams from the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Disaster Management Authority and other emergency agencies have been deployed.

Rescue workers are carefully removing debris while searching for survivors who may remain trapped underneath the collapsed structure. Emergency vehicles, ambulances and heavy equipment have also been deployed around the affected area.

Because the incident occurred in a congested locality with narrow lanes, reaching and clearing the site has presented additional challenges for rescue teams.

What Was the Cause of the Building Collapse?

The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been conclusively established.

Reports indicate that repair or construction-related work was underway in the basement at the time of the incident. Some officials have raised the possibility that excavation or unauthorised work may have contributed to the structural failure, but the final cause will have to be established through an official investigation.

Authorities have indicated that an investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding the collapse and determine whether any safety or construction regulations were violated.

Delhi Government Monitoring Rescue Efforts

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has expressed concern over the incident and said that rescue operations are being carried out on a priority basis.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke with senior officials, including the Delhi Chief Minister and the heads of Delhi Police and the NDRF, to take stock of the rescue operation.

Authorities have assured that every possible effort is being made to locate and rescue anyone who may still be trapped.
