On Monday evening, a car exploded around the metro station near Red Fort in New Delhi, killing 12 to 13 people and injuring around 20 others. The car, a Hyundai i20, exploded at 6:52 pm in a crowded area causing significant damage and panic in old Delhi. The police have involved the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act under the laws of the country as part of the investigation, meaning the police believe it was not an accident, but rather an act of terrorism. In rapidly ongoing investigations, forensic teams are examining the scene, and the police have taken three doctors from a university in Faridabad into custody for interrogation. Schools in the National Capital Region are on alert for an indefinite time, with the government has not yet ordered schools to close. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that those behind the attack “will not be spared.” The blast is prompting security and intelligence assessments across the city, at a time when Delhi is having a dual crisis of air quality and cold wave alerts simultaneously.
